Student Support Services
Special Services
Through Bergen County Special Services, any child identified as having special needs by the county Child Study Team, receives on-site supplemental instruction. These services encompass the standard curricular areas, as well as Speech Pathology. Other teachers on staff and volunteers provide basic skills instruction according to student needs during school hours. Teachers are available after school hours for extra help. In addition, we have a program of Peer Tutoring, through the St. Joseph School chapter of the National Beta Club. Beta students tutor during their own study hall hour or after school, by appointment.
Health Services
St. Joseph School has a full time nurse on staff and a well-equipped Health Office. The Nurse’s office is located in the Lower School building but she is available to all students and staff, walking up to the Upper School as situations require. Minor first aid needs in the Upper School are handled by the staff in the Vice-Principal’s office. Our nurse is able to administer routine first aid procedures, conduct health screenings for vision, hearing, and scoliosis and dispense all prescription medications to students. She monitors students who have unique health situations, i.e. diabetes, asthma, etc. In addition, the nurse is also responsible for maintaining a comprehensive health record for every child and for monitoring immunization records for compliance with the State of New Jersey Health regulations.
School Social Worker
A trained school social worker and family therapist is available to the families of St. Joseph School on a referral basis.
Food Service
St. Joseph School has daily milk and snack programs available for students who wish to purchase these items. In addition, we offer a full daily hot lunch program in both the Upper and Lower School. Meals are prepared on-site and menus are posted each month for each school building. Once a month the PTO hosts a Pizza lunch and in the Upper School, the Beta Club also has Hero Lunch Day once a month.
Transportation
The majority of our students travel to school in parent provided transportation. The rest are able to walk, due to our neighborhood location. The State does provide transportation reimbursement to parents who live at least 2.5 miles from school and who live in one of 27 eligible towns. The town of New Milford, however, provides a school bus in lieu of reimbursement. Car-pooling is encouraged and many parents make this type of arrangement.
Aftercare
Aftercare is provided until 6:00 PM every school day, except half days before major vacations. This is a drop-in service that currently charges 3.75/hour, with discounts for multiple children.
