Buildings & Grounds
St. Joseph School is located on the border of Oradell and New Milford, New Jersey, which is in northern Bergen County. The parish complex consists of the Church, Rectory, Parish Life Center, Religious Education Center, Convent, Upper School and Lower School. All are located within a two to three minute walk of each other.
The Upper School building, a two story, red brick structure, is the older of the two school buildings, but has been renovated in recent years. Nine classrooms are located in this building, along with the Vice-Principal’s Office, the Science Lab, a computer lab, and a cafeteria. The bathrooms and student lockers are also located on the cafeteria level. Students have a split lunch period, where the 5 th and 6 th grade students eat while the 7 th and 8 th grade students go outside for recess. For the second half of the period, the younger students have recess while the older children eat.
The Lower School is a one-story brick structure. There are ten classrooms, along with the Principal’s Office, Main School Office, Nurse’s Office, Gym/Auditorium, Cafeteria, and a state-of-the-art Computer Lab. Locker Rooms are located next to the Gym and there are student bathrooms both in the Gym and in the main school hallway. Students have supervised games during recess or they may use the “playscape”, which is located on a special safety surface adjacent to the school Gym.
The Library is located on the lower floor of the Parish Life Center, which is immediately adjacent to the Lower School building. The Art Room, Music Room and Resource Room are located on the Upper level of that building as well.
Students from the Upper School travel to the Lower School, under the supervision of a teacher, for Music, Computer, Gym, Art and Library. Students at this age level appreciate the opportunity for some movement during the day and enjoy this aspect of school life.
